Juhannuskallio observation tower

    The Juhannuskallio Observation Tower is 53.5 km east of Rovaniemi on the rocky hill called Juhannuskallio in Kaihuanvaara. The Kaihuanvaara and Kivalot areas are easily accessible day-trip destinations. Tree-covered hills are prominent elements in the Kemi River landscape. Kaihuanvaara offers a diverse network of hiking trails and conveniences.

    The massive observation tower is along the Juhannuskallio Scenery Trail at 330 m above sea level. You can access the observation deck via stairs and an intermediate platform. The tower has no roof. It is surrounded by a beautiful hill-top forest. The tower offers great views over the rural landscape around the Kemi River and the hills in the area.

    The spacious log-built Juhannuskallio lean-to is 20 m from the observation tower. There is a campfire site and log benches in front of the lean-to, as well as a woodshed and outhouse nearby.

    Directions: drive 2.6 km out of the city centre of Rovaniemi along Sodankyläntie; turn right on Kuusamontie; drive 49.3 km to Vanttauskoski, where the road turns into Pirttikoskentie; continue for 6.3 km; turn left on Kaarnijärventie; drive 2.1 km; turn right on Kaihuanvaaran rengastie; drive 1.3 km; turn right on Kaihuanvaaran rengastie; drive 1.2 km to the parking area on your left. The tower is 1.3 km from the parking area along the Juhannuskallio Scenery Trail.
