Korkalovaara–Vennivaara Winter Walking Trail
- Difficulty
The winter walking trail has been established in the extensive forest and marshland area between two districts of Rovaniemi: Korkalovaara and Vennivaara. The trail was built during autumn 2025 and was part of the city’s participatory budgeting projects.
Route Description
The total length of the trail is 8.5 km, and it includes two separate loop routes. The shorter loop is especially designed for families with children. On the southern edge of Vennivaara, the trail runs through dense spruce and mixed forests, while on the northern slopes of Korkalovaara it passes through areas of mature pine forest.
Between the two hills lies a large mire area, which is at times open, treeless fen, but also contains extensive sparsely wooded bog. In the wettest sections, wooden bridges have been built over ditches and streams.
Both residential areas have access paths connecting to the loop routes. These connector paths start from pedestrian and cycling routes or the ends of residential streets, providing good accessibility to the trail network. The only designated parking area is on the Korkalovaara side at the end of Taivaanrannantie, where a connector path to the winter walking trail begins.
The trail is primarily intended for winter walking, as it is located in very wet mire terrain. Once early-winter frost has set in and a sufficiently thick layer of snow has accumulated, the trail can be maintained by packing it with a snowmobile.
Signage and Crossings
The trail is marked in the terrain with continuous signposts, each topped with a blue background symbol indicating winter walking.

Along the route there are also numerous other signs, such as directional and distance markers as well as information maps.

The winter walking trail crosses a ski track, a snowmobile route, and a pedestrian and cycling path several times. These crossing points are equipped with warning signs. Please exercise caution at all crossings.
Rest Area
The rest area is located at the Korkalovaara nature trail’s lean-to shelter. During a wildfire warning, making fires is strictly prohibited everywhere, and firewood supply to the shelter is suspended.
In case of an emergency, call 112.
Enjoy your walk!
