Ounasvaara observation tower

The Ounasvaara Observation Tower is 2.2 km east of the city centre of Rovaniemi, on the western slope of Ounasvaara. The massive tower stands on the rocky hillside of Ounasvaara, amidst a pine forest along the Ounasvaara Winter Trail, at 160 m above sea level. You can access the observation deck via stairs and an intermediate platform. The tower has a roof, and it offers magnificent views over the city centre and the Kemi River. Next to the tower, there is a log-built lean-to with a campfire site and woodshed.

Directions: drive 1.1 km out of the Rovaniemi city centre along Kajaanintie; turn left on Ounasrinteentie; drive 350 m; turn left on Hiihtomajantie; drive 1.5 km to the Ounasvaara Cabin’s parking area. Follow the signposts from the parking area to the observation tower (900 m).

You can access the tower via several trails, for example, from the Ounasvaara Cabin’s parking area, the Sports Academy, and Ranuantie. In the winter, you can walk along the Ounasvaara Winter Trail or snowshoe to the tower.
